Why You’ll Love This Delicious Dessert

  • No dough from scratch! Store-bought biscuits save you time without sacrificing comfort or flavor.
  • Warm and nostalgic. Think sweet blackberries tucked into pillowy biscuit dumplings. Hello, childhood memories!
  • Perfect for all seasons. Whether you’re using fresh berries or frozen, this recipe always hits the spot.
  • Serve hot or cold. Add a scoop of vanilla ice cream for a summertime treat or serve warm with whipped cream during the holidays.

What Do Blackberry Dumplings Taste Like?

This dessert is pure comfort food. The blackberries break down into a luscious, syrupy filling that’s sweet with a subtle tartness. The biscuits puff up as they bake, soaking in just enough syrup to stay moist while keeping a fluffy, tender bite. It’s sweet, tangy, buttery, and warm. All of the best things about home cooking and summertime are in one dessert.

Why Are My Dumplings Doughy?

Doughy centers often mean the dumplings weren’t cooked long enough. Even if they look done on the outside, the insides may still be raw. Make sure you simmer them gently, covered, for at least 15–20 minutes, depending on size.

Dumplings need steam to rise and cook through. If you lift the lid too soon, you lose that essential steam, resulting in heavy, gummy centers. Try not to peek until the last few minutes.

Ingredients To Grab

Ingredients needed to make Blackberry Dumplings
  • Canned Biscuits– These make dumpling prep quick and easy. As they cook, they soak up the berry syrup and turn into pillowy, tender dumplings without the hassle of making dough from scratch.
  • Blackberries– Whether fresh or frozen, blackberries are the star of the dish. They provide that signature sweet-tart flavor and break down into a jammy, fruit-filled sauce as they cook.
  • Granulated Sugar– Sugar draws out the juice from the berries, sweetens the dish, and helps thicken the mixture into a rich, fruity syrup.
  • Water– Acts as the base for the syrup, helping to dissolve the sugar and cook down the berries and biscuits evenly.
  • Lemon Juice– A splash of acidity brightens the dish, balances the sweetness, and enhances the natural flavor of the blackberries.
  • Vanilla Extract– Adds depth and warmth to the dumplings, giving them a comforting flavor that’s perfect for cozy desserts.

Together, these simple ingredients create a rustic, crowd-pleasing dessert that’s bursting with berry goodness and buttery biscuit comfort.

How To Make Blackberry Dumplings With Biscuits

Ingredients needed to make the blackberry dumpling sauce simmering in a skillet

Make the Blackberry Syrup. In a large skillet or saucepan, combine blackberries, sugar, water, lemon juice, and a splash of vanilla. Bring it all to a simmer over medium heat and cook until the berries start to break down and the mixture thickens slightly. This should take 8–10 minutes.

Add the Biscuits. Cut each biscuit into six pieces. This is for the larger-sized biscuits, not the tiny little “hockey puck” refrigerated biscuits. If you have the smaller ones, cut them into four. Drop the pieces gently into the simmering blackberry mixture, spacing them out evenly.

Cook. Cover the skillet with a lid and reduce the heat to low. Let everything simmer gently for about 10 minutes. Remove the lid and give them a very gentle stir to carefully break up the dumplings and ensure they are all coated with the blackberry reduction. Cover and simmer for an additional 5 minutes or until the biscuits are cooked through and fluffy.

Serve and Enjoy! Spoon the warm dumplings and berries into bowls and serve with a dollop of whipped cream or a scoop of ice cream. The syrup will thicken more as it cools.

Tips And Tricks

Making blackberry dumplings with biscuits is a deliciously nostalgic treat, and with a few simple tips and tricks, you can ensure your dessert turns out perfectly every time. Here’s how to get the best results:

  • Use Cold Biscuit Dough. Cold dough holds its shape better and gives a fluffier texture when cooked.
  • Don’t Overcrowd the Pot. Leave room between each biscuit to allow them to expand and cook evenly.
  • Simmer, Don’t Boil. A gentle simmer helps the dumplings cook through without falling apart.
  • Cover While Cooking. Keeping the lid on traps steam, which helps the dumplings puff up and cook through.

Variations

Blackberry dumplings with biscuits are a cozy, old-fashioned dessert, but that doesn’t mean you can’t have a little fun with the flavors! Try one of these tasty variations to give your dumplings a unique twist:

  • Mixed Berries– Swap some of the blackberries for raspberries, blueberries, or strawberries for a berry blend.
  • Peach & Blackberry– Add sliced canned peaches to the blackberry mixture for a sweet and tangy combo.
  • Spiced Dumplings– Stir cinnamon, nutmeg, or cardamom into the biscuit dough for a warm, spiced flavor.

What To Eat With Blackberry Dumplings

Blackberry dumplings are rich, sweet, and comforting on their own, but pairing them with the right sides or toppings can take this cozy dessert to the next level. Here are some delicious ideas for what to eat with your quick sweet dumplings:

  • Vanilla Ice Cream– A cold, creamy scoop that melts beautifully into the warm syrup.
  • Whipped Cream– Light and airy, it adds a soft contrast to the dense dumplings.
  • Lemon Curd– Adds a bright, zesty punch that balances the sweetness of the berries.
  • Toasted Pecans or Walnuts– Sprinkle over the top for a bit of crunch and nutty flavor.
  • Fresh Mint Leaves– A few leaves on top can add freshness and a pop of color.

How Long Do They Last?

Store leftover dumplings in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days. Reheat them gently on the stovetop or in the microwave until warmed through for that fresh-out-of-the-oven flavor.

Keep in mind the biscuits will continue to absorb syrup, so the texture softens over time, but the flavor is still spot-on.

Can You Freeze Them?

Freezing your leftover dumplings is not recommended. The biscuit texture tends to get mushy after thawing, and the syrup can separate. This dessert is best enjoyed fresh or within a couple of days reheated from the fridge!

Prep Time 5 minutes

Total Time 20 minutes
Servings: 8 servings
Course: Dessert

Ingredients

  • 12 ounces Blackberries
  • 16 ounces Refrigerated Biscuits
  • 1 cup Granulated Sugar
  • 1 tsp Vanilla Extract
  • 1 tbsp Lemon Juice
  • 1/2 tsp Salt
  • 1 cup Water

Method

  2. Add the Biscuits. Cut each biscuit into six pieces. This is for the larger sized biscuits, not the tiny little "hockey puck" refrigerated biscuits. If you have the smaller ones, cut them in four. Drop the pieces gently into the simmering blackberry mixture, spacing them out evenly.
  3. Cook. Cover the skillet with a lid and reduce heat to low. Let everything simmer gently for about 10 minutes. Remove the lid and give them a very gentle stir to carefully break up the dumplings and ensure they are all coated with the blackberry reduction. Cover and simmer for an additional 5 minutes or until the biscuits are cooked through and fluffy.
  4. Serve and Enjoy! Spoon the warm dumplings and berries into bowls and serve with a dollop of whipped cream or a scoop of ice cream. The syrup will thicken more as it cools.

Notes

The amount of time it takes for the blackberries to reduce to create the sauce can vary depending on how ripe the berries are. The more ripe the berries, the less time you will need to simmer.

I’m a huge fan of berry recipes and this looks so mouth-watering, with the dumplings soaking up all the blackberry juices. Can’t wait to try it out!

  2. The recipe is missing how much water to add and when to mix in the salt, so I improvised. I also added a splash of 7-Up to the syrup. This gave it a little more tang. It did take the blackberries about 15-20 minutes break down and 20 minutes until the dumplings were cooked through.

Have made this twice and has turned out great both times! I left the salt out of the recipe since it doesn’t say when to add it. Questions I have would be if other berries would work with the same recipe, and could you remove the seeds before making the syrup? Thanks for a great and easy recipe!

    1. Thanks for the great review! Raspberries would work great too. A combination of the two would be lovely.

To remove the seeds you could make the syrup and press it through a fine mesh strainer with the back of a wooden spoon. I haven’t tried it myself, but I bet it would work!
