Ashley’s Advice

This Beef and Bean Taco Pizza gives serious Casey’s Pizza vibes. If you’re from the Midwest, you know what I’m talking about. If you want it to have a more copycat Casey’s Pizza taste, consider using Catalina dressing instead of enchilada sauce and toss on some crushed Doritos just before serving.

What Does Taco Pizza Taste Like?

Taco pizza tastes like a loaded taco on a savory, pillowy crust. The seasoned meat and refried beans provide bold flavor, the cheese and enchilada sauce add richness, and the fresh toppings balance everything with crunch and freshness.

It’s savory, cheesy, slightly spicy, and incredibly satisfying.

What Does Taco Pizza Have On It?

  • Refrigerated pizza dough– Creates an easy, reliable crust that bakes up soft on the inside with lightly crisp edges.
  • Refried beans– Form a creamy base layer that adds flavor and helps hold the toppings in place.
  • Ground beef– Provides hearty, savory protein and classic taco flavor.
  • Taco seasoning– Seasons the beef with bold spices and gives the pizza its signature taco taste.
  • Enchilada sauce– Adds moisture and extra depth of flavor while keeping the pizza from drying out.
  • Shredded cheese– Melts over the meat and beans to tie all the flavors together.
  • Lettuce– Adds fresh crunch and balances the warm, savory toppings.
  • Tomato– Brings brightness and a juicy bite to each slice.
  • Sour cream– Finishes the pizza with a cool, creamy contrast to the seasoned beef.

How To Make Beef And Bean Taco Pizza

Refrigerated Pizza Dough pressed into a white pie plate

Prepare the Dough. Start by preheating your oven to 425F and pressing your pizza crust into a greased pie plate. I used an XL 13″ pie plate for 8 servings. If you use a standard pie plate, this will yield smaller pieces, or 6 standard-sized pizza slices. You can use any size baking dish you prefer, just remember that the larger the dish, the thinner your pizza dough will be. Gently poke holes in the pizza dough with a fork and bake for 10-12 minutes, until the pizza crust is golden brown.

Cook the Taco Meat. While the pizza crust is baking, cook the ground beef in a skillet for 5-7 minutes until browned. Drain excess grease, then stir in the taco seasoning and water. Simmer the seasoned meat and water mixture until it is thickened and flavorful.

Assemble the Taco Pizza. Spread a thin layer of refried beans over the baked pizza crust. This adds flavor and helps the toppings stick. Evenly spread the taco meat over the crust, add the enchilada sauce evenly over the top of the meat, and then sprinkle generously with shredded cheese.

Bake again. Brush the pizza crust with an egg wash to ensure it is sturdy and golden brown. Pop the taco pizza back into the oven at 425F for an additional 5-8 minutes. This time we’re just baking the pizza until the cheese is melted and bubbly. The edges should be lightly golden, and the center should be hot.

Adding Fresh Toppings. After baking, top the taco pizza with shredded lettuce, tomatoes, sour cream, and any other fresh toppings you love on a taco.

Tips And Tricks

These helpful tips will ensure your taco pizza turns out flavorful, crispy, and perfectly balanced every time.

  • Use a fork. The toppings on this pizza make it very heavy and hard for the pizza crust to support. Enjoy this pizza as more of a taco pizza casserole than a grab-and-bite slice.
  • Drain the ground beef well. Remove the grease after cooking the ground beef so that excess grease doesn’t soak into the crust.
  • Spread refried beans in a thin layer. Too many refried beans can be an overwhelming texture when combined with a thick and pillowy pizza crust. Spread them thin to give flavor and sticking power to your pizza, but don’t overdo it.
  • Use freshly shredded cheese. Shredding your own cheese allows for better melting and cheesy flavor.
  • Let the pizza rest. Place the cooked pizza on the countertop and allow it to cool for a few minutes before topping and slicing for cleaner cuts and fresh flavor.

Variations

Once you’ve mastered the classic version, these easy variations let you switch things up while keeping the same comfort-food appeal.

  • Chicken Taco Pizza– Swap ground beef for seasoned shredded chicken.
  • Spicy Taco Pizza– Add jalapeños or drizzle with hot sauce for extra heat.
  • Vegetarian Taco Pizza– Replace beef with black beans or seasoned veggies.
  • Dorito Taco Pizza– Sprinkle crushed Doritos on top after baking for crunch.

How Long Does It Last?

Beef and bean taco pizza will keep well in the refrigerator for 3 to 4 days when stored properly. Allow the pizza to cool completely, then place slices in an airtight container or wrap them tightly in foil or plastic wrap.

For the best texture and flavor, store any fresh toppings like lettuce, tomato, and sour cream separately and add them after reheating. Reheat slices in the oven or air fryer to prevent the crust from being too soggy.

Can You Freeze It?

Yes, you can freeze beef and bean taco pizza, but it’s best to do so before adding fresh toppings.

Once the pizza has cooled, wrap individual slices tightly in plastic wrap and place them in a freezer-safe bag or container. The pizza can be frozen for up to 2 months.

When you’re ready to eat your leftovers, reheat the pizza slices directly from frozen in the oven until warmed through, then add fresh lettuce, tomato, and sour cream before serving for the best results.
